In the photograph below we see a rubber roll, also known as a transfer roll, that has some
problems yet is still being used on a printer with corresponding problems.

Notice that there is more than one problem here. Let us list them:
* The roll has ribs all the way across.
* There is roll damage to some of the areas.
* There are brown marks on the left side of the roll.

And what do we do about this condition? For the novice in the printing room you should have
rotated this roll out of production a long time ago. How long? Well assuming that there was no
damage, at about 200 to 400 machine hours. If there was damage to the roll, it should have been
taken out of service even sooner. And those brown marks to the right indicate that some chemical
either spilled onto the roll or came in contact with the roll.

Bottom line:  Rotate your rolls regularly and have a roll inspection program to periodically perform a
formal survey of the roll for continued operation.

Never let this roll back onto the printer without a reconditioning.
