Problem of the Month: April, 2006 Use is not the same as Abuse!
|
In the picture below we see a punch that looks funny. Notice the finish inside the cup. Normal wear? Bad
cleaning? Abuse? And what does one do about this situation? Throw the punch away?
This punch had been compressing an abrasive material that has worn down the mirror finish with time. When
compressing some materials this is a normal, expected condition. Throw the punch away? No! Simply repolish
it.
And what about longer term. What’s the fall out? Well, with this type of material you may want to consider that
you will likely have a higher punch replacement budget associated with increased wear.
You might want to consider contacting your tooling supplier to discuss using other types of stainless steel to
help reduce wear over time. 440C stainless steel might be an alternative, say if you are compressing salt
tablets or tablets with a high content of Calcium.
Good luck!
