Serious Picking Can Lead To Rejected Batches

The FDA recalls batches of tablets for picking like we see below. Yet this picture of
Tegretol 10 mg. was taken from the PDR (Physicians Desk Reference) indicating that
someone along the way released a batch with tablets in it like the one we see.

And what exactly causes the two “9’s” and the “8” to pick? Unfortunately, there is more
than one possible root cause and working through the possibilities in a structured manner
requires both training and experience. But if one thinks about it, the picking is occurring on
both sides of the tablet, indicating a second level, or more serious, problem.

In our textbook, “The Supervisor’s Guide” we discuss all aspects of picking and how to
prevent it. Our latest article in Pharmaceutical Technology, Europe also covers the subject
in more detail.
