Friability and Tablet Manufacturing

The problem: Friability as a test is not well understood by operators and line management.
Why havethis test? What is the use? What does one learn from it anyway? Here’s a good
example of what happens when you don’t react to a friability problem, or you just don’t get it:
.

In this case, we see a great deal of powder adhering to the inside of a plastic bottle? The
problem, bad friability!
The friability test can tell us two very useful (but different) things. First, is the formula/tablet
good enough to pass the test (not more than 1% loss at the end of the test) and second and
more importantly, does the tablet cap?
Companies that truly know the value of the friability test have written SOP’s that stipulate
certain conditions that will trigger a MANDATORY friability test. One example situation: the
operator wants to increase the tablet speed by more than 200 tablets per minute.
Good luck!
