| From Problem of The Month, September, 2009 Humidity and Sustained Release Tablets Never underestimate what ambient humidity can do to your release rate profile! Time and time again I see that room humidity in the compressing suite is not controlled the way it should be. So if you have a picking problem, before you purchase pr-picked tools, or coat your tooling with Chromium Nitride, control the humidity. This is especially true in the tablet coating area, even if your release rate membrane is organic based. Wet and dry coating conditions can and do produce shifts in a release rate profile. For example, with cellulose acetate, you can see the effect when a clear membrane is compared to a cloudy membrane. And don’t trust the engineers when they say there is a dehumidification system and it is functional. Sometimes the system is sick, under engineered for the most humid days or even installed wrong (backwards!). I’ve seen all three of these conditions, at Pharmaceutical companies, in the past 18 months alone. Sorry I’m late this month! Happy end of summer in North America. |
