How does one prepare a botanical, say like the Alfalfa above, for successful compressing as a
tablet or successful filling into a hard shell capsule? How does one insure that the powder we
see above will in fact act as well as it appears? The answer is not simple but there are some
statements that we can make immediately that will help the granulator/formulator to better
appreciate the answer to the challenge.

Fourth: Dry granulating. Raw material suppliers use this method of powder preparation all the
time. Call them up, ask them! And what is dry granulating? It is the application of mechanical
force upon powders. Just as we see below in this illustration
In small companies you may do the same. Purchase a small roller compactor much like
that seen above and dry granulate your raw material through the wheels you see. Or
alternatively you may take any set of punches and compress your raw material into
“hardly sticking together ugly tablets I would never sell” and then pass them through a mill.
And presto, you have done just what your vendor does: dry granulating your powder into
granules by the application of mechanical force.

Good Luck!
