Granulating Botanicals Can Be Challenging: Part three
|

How does one prepare a botanical, say like the Alfalfa above, for successful compressing as a tablet or successful filling
into a hard shell capsule? How does one insure that the powder we see above will in fact act as well as it appears? The
answer is not simple but there are some statements that we can make immediately that will help the
granulator/formulator to better appreciate the answer to the challenge.
Third: Wet granulating. Why would one choose this path? What benefit does it have for our material? You must assume
that your material does not degrade in the presence of water (“moisture”) or heat. Alfalfa does neither. Knowing this we
may use a “pharmaceutical or food grade glue” and bind the materials together forming granules. These granules will
allow the material to flow fast and allows us to run the tablet press fast and the encapsulator at top speed.
While this type of powder preparation, or granulating, is technically feasible it is not particularly popular with nutritional
supplement companies. And why is that? Because of the capital required to purchase the equipment and the research
necessary to detail the process. But it is used. It was used to produce the very excellent Alfalfa powder above. And one
may use this powder in capsules, in tablets and in pouches for dissolving it in liquid for immediate use.
Good luck!
