Granulating Botanicals Can Be Challenging: Part two”
|

How does one prepare a botanical, say like the Alfalfa above, for successful compressing as a tablet or successful filling
into a hard shell capsule? How does one insure that the powder we see above will in fact act as well as it appears? The
answer is not simple but there are some statements that we can make immediately that will help the
granulator/formulator to better appreciate the answer to the challenge.
Second: Spend a little money and buy yourself a bulk density tester. Better yet buy yourself a two funnel tester. And
learn about the Hausner ratio. What is that? It is a simple test to that will accurately predict how well your powder flows.
And what exactly does that prove? What method of granulating you will select!
After you have this number, you next determine what portion of your formula this item will be. If it is a small portion of the
formula, maybe you do not need to granulate. If it is the main component and takes up most of the space, you need to
determine what method you will use: the wet granulating method or the drying granulating method.
For there are only three pathways to the tablet press: directly blending powders that flow well, wet granulating powders
with a binder or dry granulating powders with extreme pressures. There are no other paths to the press.
